Keeping a Spiritual Journal

CLASS SESSION #27 – THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2020
Presenter: Dr. Wilfred Graves Jr.

In this session, Dr. Graves introduces the class to the spiritual discipline of journaling. A journal is a written record of personal thoughts, experiences, and observations. A spiritual journal helps us to reflect upon our daily lives so that we can clearly discern God’s presence, guidance, and dealings with us. Keeping a journal is a wonderful companion activity to other spiritual disciplines such as listening prayer, intercession, and meditating on Scripture.

Do not forget to access the class materials and additional resources that are available through the “Quick Links” section.

  1. Sometimes it is good simply to remind ourselves of who God is. In your journal, create a list of true statements about God to declare throughout the week. (examples: God is good; God is a very present help in trouble; God is a provider; etc.) How do these statements make you feel?

  2. Create a gratitude journal.  Each day, for the next 7 days, list several things in your journal for which you are thankful. You may want to share your list with your loved ones and friends during the Thanksgiving holiday.

  3. Consider some of the prayer journal suggestions in the video by Dr. Graves and implement them this week. Keeping a list of prayer requests (and answers to prayer), impactful Scriptures, and reflections on life are great ways to apply the spiritual discipline of journaling.
