Video on Solitude and Silence
This video introduces the spiritual disciplines of solitude and silence.  Solitude is the state of being alone.  It is being isolated from noise and distractions.  The discipline of silence is the voluntary removal of noise from our surroundings.  It is often necessary to remove ourselves from noise and people in order to connect with God and receive his instructions.  Jesus himself often withdrew to solitary places so that he could spend quiet time with the Heavenly Father. We should follow his example. Please enjoy the following presentation by Dr. Wilfred Graves Jr.

Applying What Was Learned: Homework from Dr. Graves

  1. Find a solitary place and spend at least 30 minutes this week in silence before the Lord.  Bring a Bible and a journal if you like, but do not do a lot of talking.  Simply rest in the Lord’s presence, think about his goodness, and allow him to minister to you as you quiet yourself before him.
  2. Were you more aware of God’s presence during your time of silence? When and how did you notice resistance to your desire to be silent? What was God saying to you in your silence? Check out the short devotion by Dr. Wilfred Graves entitled “Quiet Yourself Before the Lord.”
  3. If you are especially blessed by this assignment, or any other assignment from the class, please send an email describing your experience to Also, feel free to email us at any time with your testimonies.

  1. Journal Entry 5-1-20 2:16 am The homework assignment was to chose a bible verse then for the next 5 days meditate on it. Suddenly it was as if someone was shouting from the top of a ten story building, “Be not weary in well doing”, then while you were praying Dr. Owens warm tears began to flow from my eyes down my cheeks in between my fingers, into my hands. Prior to this assignment I had been asking the Lord, why do I always have to be nice? Why do I have to be the one to always turn the other cheek? Why do I always have to suck-it-up? Why do I always have to take the highroad, forgive those that continue to hurt me why, why, why? I didn’t want anyone to see my tears, so as as soon as you said Amen, I clicked the X in the upper right hand corner!
I started with “Silence and Solitude” which helped me draw closer to God, and as we move forward I am being helped, encouraged and inspired to continue even when I want to quit.

The Lord asked each of you one day if you would feed My people? You said yes! Thank you for accepting your assignment, because you did many lives will never be the same, I know mine won’t.
